The Golden Globes - Live! Sort of!

Right now I'm watching the Dateline NBC pre-show. Does Dateline have writers who are on strike because some of the segues in these interviews have been dreadful. The worst, I think, was when they talked about Ellen Page in X-Men and showed a clip of Kitty Pryde running with Juggernaut chasing her and the voice over went something like "Page went from X-Men to the juggernaut of Juno." B-a-r-f. Page herself seems delightful but has that strange self-possession of child actors. You know, where they sound like they're 40 or something instead of 10-15-20.

Nikki Blonsky, on the other hand, refers to herself in the third person now and calls her hair and makeup people "my team". She was awesome in Hairspray and all, but that's a bit disturbing. Don't forget you were dishing out ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery a year ago, honey.

Okay, okay, it's starting!!! Who's going to be on the red carpet?! Who will Katherine Heigl be wearing? Will Brangelina be there?!! Oh my God!! Agh! Wait, what? This is just going to be some glorified episode of Access Hollywood? Crap. Damn those writers! Damn the AMTPT! I need me some glamour! I wonder how the egos of these actors are faring knowing they won't get to look attractive while spouting gratitude to their agents and attorneys along with some heartfelt words about the troops and their mothers. Or fathers. I feel like mothers get singled out way more than fathers.

Okay, here we go...

Best Supporting Actress Film: Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There. The dude (who is this modern marvel of milquetoast, anyway? Oh, his name is Billy Bush) is shocked. "At the end of the day, with Cate Blanchett, it's a woman imitating a man." Err... yeah. Your last name is Bush, huh? Figures.

Nancy O'Dell looks like a) she's had some work done and b) her spray tan technician is colorblind. I'm just glad she's not wearing that ugly ass Wendy Pepper dress. I'm still mad at her for putting Pepper in the final three on season one of Project Runway.

Best Supporting Actor TV: Jeremy Piven - Entourage. Why does he always win? That guy gives me the creeps. I love him as Ari Gold but he seems like such a self-involved jerk. Wait, I guess that's why he's so genius as AG.

Billy Bush's brilliant quote on this one: after mispronouncing Ari as "Airy", he called Entourage a boutique show and said, "not that many people have seen it."

Best Actress Drama TV: Glenn Close - Damages. I actually like that show, if you recall. Billy and Nancy are just lost without a teleprompter. I wonder if smoke will start coming out of their ears soon.

Best Supporting Actress TV: Samantha Morton - Longford. Apparently Katherine Heigl was supposed to win because this was a big year for her, according to Nancy, who told us "She got married." Well, geez. How come I didn't win any awards in 2006, then?!! Also, you know, never mind that SM could act circles around KH.

Best Actor TV: Jon Hamm - Mad Men. Haven't seen this show but it's been recommended to me by several people. Nancy is surprised Hugh Laurie didn't win because he has for the past two years. Okay... Well, then he should just win forever, I guess?

Best Animated Film: Ratatouille. Billy loves this movie. Probably because kids movies are all he can comprehend.

Best Actress Comedy or Musical Film: Marion Cotillard - La Vie en Rose. Well, color me shocked. I thought Amy Adams would win. Billy thought Ellen Page or Nikki Blonsky. Either way, I don't think anyone was expecting Marion Cotillard. I guess Dateline interviewed all the wrong actresses! Oops!

Best Supporting Actor Film: Javier Bardem - No Country For Old Men. Apparently Bardem used to be a stripper. I am really enjoying these fun facts O'Dell keeps dispensing. I've heard great things about his performance and Billy likens it to Darth Vader.

Best Actress Mini-Series or TV Movie: Queen Latifah - Life Support. Or as Billy says, "Queeeeeeeeen Latifah. She did it her way." I think Billy and Nancy need to go on life support. Their pundit counterparts aren't much better. Their discussion about Marion Cotillard included very little about her performance and was really all about how it would have been great if she could have walked the red carpet so we could see how beautiful she really is (because apparently Edith Piaf was a dog).

Best Actor Comedy TV: David Duchovny - Californication. Zzzzzzz. I wonder how the Red Hot Chili Peppers feel now. Apparently the Globes are spreading the wealth, says, Nancy, but don't you fret Lee Pace! You're charming so you're gonna win someday!

Best Comedy TV: Extras. Okay. I would have preferred 30 Rock, but it's hard to argue with Ricky Gervais' painful genius. Speaking of HBO "boutique shows", I bet even fewer people have seen Extras than Entourage, Billy!

Best Actress Comedy TV: Tina Fey - 30 Rock. Yay!!! I love TF and Liz Lemon. However, I will confess that her drunk dialing the co-op board bothered me a little. She's too clever and smart a woman to do something that desperate and stupid, right? TF is brilliant, though, and if I believed in heroes, she would be one of mine. Blarg.

Best Director Film: Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. I have got to see this film. Everyone out there should run run run to read the book. It's beautiful, haunting and remarkable. I've read nothing but great reviews for the adaptation. I'm a little bummed that this big of an upset is only marked by Billy Bush's blank stare.

Best Actor Comedy or Musical Film: Johnny Depp - Sweeney Todd. Go Kentucky! Whooo! Go my former boss! Whooo! Yeah! Okay, whatever. Billy needs his own sitcom. This guy is comedy gold. He is totally making this telecast.

Best Film Comedy or Musical: Sweeney Todd. I haven't seen this. I'm afraid to. It looks pretty delicious, though, and as Billy says, "You know, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, that, when you get that kind of collaboration like Scorsese and DiCaprio or something, it just seems to be able to pull it off together it's brilliant and congratulations."

Best Drama TV: Mad Men. "What a night for Jon Hamm! It's just a great sleek sexy show, early 60s Madison Avenue, although there's a lot of smoking going on in the movie and the the actors better have good insurance." Guess who said that?! Betcha can't figure it out! Yup, my boy Billy! He is AWESOME!

Best Actress Drama Film: Julie Christie - Away from Her. Go Sarah Polley!

Best Actor Drama Film: Daniel Day Lewis - There Will Be Blood. Billy says, "He is really the real deal." My friend George raved about DDL's performance, but I have a big PT Anderson bias I'm trying to get past.

Best Drama Film: Atonement. I guess I sort of have to watch it. It looks like a snoozefest, though.

That's all she wrote, folks. Ironically, no writer awards announced! You can find the rest of the winners here.

Thank you and good night!

The Truth About Hillary: Odd Girl Out?

Yesterday I actually sat through two Lifetime network movies, The Truth About Jane featuring Ellen Muth (George from Dead Like Me) and RuPaul (playing a man, but still gay) and Odd Girl Out, a Mean Girls ripoff starring Alexa Vega (from Spy Kids). I must say it heartens me to see such positive message flicks (especially Truth About Jane) on a network that, wrong or right, seems so very Harlequin Romance and possibly conservative. That said, I must say most chick-lit I read does seem distinctly Democratic.

Moving on, I don't know how well Hillary Clinton's hour long appearance on Meet the Press is going to serve her. I may have been cringing at times, not because of what she said, but because she has such image problems and I suspect at the heart of it her intelligence comes with a certain amount of arrogance and impatience (which showed) yet she's just been clearly told that being "human" is what plays well with the crowd. However, I think it sucks that she must walk this line of being soft yet tough (we're supposed to burnt marshmallows?), but isn't that the challenge of ALL women? I know that I am rarely graceful about being either (and this is, of course, the only reason why I don't run for president).

And speaking of the challenges of women, tonight marks the return of Rock of Love featuring our favorite phone-sex recipient Bret Michaels! Gosh, I just can't wait to find out who this season's Lacey, Jes and Heather are going to be!! The mind does boggle.
Also tonight, the, err, press conference announcing the winners of the Golden Globes. I'll have a little report on what is sure to be a scintillating broadcast for you later. Or tomorrow. I must finish Eclipse and be done with the Cullens, the classiest vampire family ever. Mostly I'm just sick of Bella, the highly average teenager who has somehow managed to enchant not only the most sophisticated vampires but the most interesting werewolves, as well. I'm sure I'm just jealous. I want mythical creatures for buddies!

Tying this post together, I just read that Anne Rice has endorsed... Hillary Clinton! Does this mean Hillary will become the Queen of the Damned? Inheriting GW's mess (not to mention all the monarchy/dynasty questions), I'm sure it probably feels that way to her.

I'm going to write a Lifetime movie someday! Right after I finish watching Queen Size starring Nikki Blonsky and Annie Potts!
Ms. P

ps. Here's something amusing for all you My So Called Life fans out there. Angela Chase talks about the issues.

pps. Just read this article about the potential unraveling of the writer's strike.

ppps. Newsweek got told (do people still use that slang?) by... Clay Aiken! Ha ha!

Sexist Emails I Have Known

When I got home tonight, this missive was in my inbox:

"In a news conference Deanna Favre announced she will be the starting QB for the Packers this coming Sunday.

Deanna asserts that she is qualified to be starting QB because she has spent the past 16 years married to Brett while he played QB for the Packers.

During this period of time she became familiar with the definition of a corner blitz, and is now completely comfortable with other terminology of the Packers offense. A survey of Packers fans shows that 50% of those polled supported the move.

Does this sounds idiotic and unbelievable to you?

Well, Hillary Clinton makes the same claims as to why she is qualified to be President and 50% of democrats polled agreed.

Hillary Clinton has never run a City, County, or State.

When he was told Hillary Clinton has experience because she has 8 years in the white house, Dick Morris stated "so has the pastry chef" !"

I find this rather insulting, not to mention stupid (quoting Dick Morris. Yeah...) Football and the physical ability to play it - and the examples given - are completely different than Clinton's experience. What makes it worse is that a woman (who's a Democrat) sent this to me. People with glass ceilings shouldn't throw stones.

Barack Obama and John Edwards have never run a city, county or state, either. If those are the qualifications by which we must judge, we can only elect Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee at this point. Besides, George W. Bush ran Texas and look where we are now.

Most women I know think they're smarter than their husbands (or ex-husbands). By that logic, she should be an even better president than Bill, and he wasn't bad.

Bill Maher, whose return I welcomed last night, said, "If you hate Hillary Clinton it is so about you."

Frankly, at the end of the day I think anyone who wants to be president is already wack (or is it whack?). You have to have a giant ego and be fairly narcissistic. I think the right person for this job will never run. He or she is too smart. It's an honorable job but the process sure isn't (and in that respect, I think they all fail). In the meantime, we must elect someone and I pray to someone that it's not Mitten, Huckabee, Thompson or Giuliani. I'm less distressed by McCain but that's a different discussion for another time.

Your Monday Morning Quarterback,
Ms. P

Solidarity with the WGA: Better Than Speechless

I'm enjoying Law & Order's take on the writers' strike much more than those weird morose Speechless campaign pieces.

The Presidential Race, Gossip Girl, Project Runway and Rambo: Let the Bodies Hit the Floor

Goodness gracious, where do I begin?

I saw the commercial for the new Rambo movie. The song used to advertise this little ode to testosterone? "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" by I don't even remember or care. Way to date your movie, Sly. Way to be so very not ought.

Last night was jam packed with New York madness. Why are there no shows about Nebraska madness?

Project Runway returned to terrible form with a collection of some of the ugliest prom dresses I've ever seen. I mean, I know prom dresses, by definition, trend towards hideous but those were some fugly frocks. I'm a bit sad that weird beard guy is gone but not really because none of these designers are gaining my sympathy. Except, and I called that I would turn to the dark side on this one, Christian Siriano. Watching him work with the bratty teenager who basically drew the dress then hated it reminded me of Jeffrey Sebelia working with Angela's drippy mom. I felt sorry for him, too. And couldn't stand him, either. I am looking forward to hearing more of Tim's new catchphrase, "Rally!" I hope it replaces "Make it work!" That declaration is so two seasons ago, darling.

Bravo also offered up Make Me a Supermodel: Meet the Models. These contestants make the America's Next Top Model girls look like Mensa candidates (egads, one of them is from Plano, TX! First Chace Crawford, now this girl. What is going on here? That devil town needs to fade into the obscurity it deserves) and Niki Taylor is no Tyra Banks (which may be a compliment come to think of it). Some of the boys are purty cute and my favorite is the dopey deputy from Nashville, Ben DiChiara (Barney Fife). I bet they love him at the prison!

I had three servings of vicious Upper East Side action with Gossip Girl, The Nanny Diaries (Tom's choice, not mine) and Cashmere Mafia. I know people in New York aren't awful but then again, I don't know anyone on the UES. Wait, I used to. And she was just as scary. $113 million will buy you amazing art and great clothes, but it will not buy happiness or nice. Anyhoo, I sat rapt as Blair Waldorf (in scenes very reminiscent of Heathers including the colored tights and passing of the headband to Jenny) and Mrs X (I'm sorry, but when I listened to Julia Roberts read that book, I did not picture Paul Giamatti - much as I love him - as Mr. X) got their comeuppance. As for the women of Cashmere Mafia... I don't mind Mia and Zoe but the wannabe cheating wife (Miranda Otto) and the wannabe lesbian (Bonnie Sommerville)... they're making me tired.

This is going to sound awful but I can't even tell A/The Daily Show and The Colbert Report don't have writers. Their coverage of the bumbing pundits mis-calling New Hampshire made me laugh out loud at both which I haven't done in quite a while. However, between all the nitwits at CNN, Bill Kristol and Chris Matthews, they had an embarrassment of riches.

Speaking of politics, Bill Richardson dropped out of the race before the Nevada Caucus (his one possible winner). It makes me wonder what kind of deal Clinton cut with him to get him out. I've long thought he was the obvious choice as her running mate. We'll see.

Catch ya later, tater,
Ms. P

Bill Kristol Can Kiss My Butt

On any given day, I would probably possess that sentiment but Fox News' Bill Kristol had this to say about Hillary Clinton's win in New Hampshire:

"It's the tears. She pretended to cry, the women felt sorry for her, and she won."

I confess that I'm almost suspicious about my affection for Hillary. But wrong or right, she's my choice. So Bill Kristol, you can suck it. You insulted Hillary, you insulted women, you insulted emotion and you and the white man establishment are going down. So there! Okay, the white man establishment thing might be a pipe dream but a girl can fantasize, right?

John McCain pulled off a semi-stunning victory. I don't know that he win another one, though. There was a time when I respected JM, but his evangelical pandering really irked me. Also, his current wax museum look isn't going to play well in a general election. Especially if he's up against Obama.

Speaking of Barack, part of me wants to embrace him 100%. He's attractive, he's a top notch orator who seems to be channeling Martin Luther King Jr., he represents a hopeful feeling we haven't had in years and he's really intelligent. I just get an uncomfortable greener than a Greenie feeling about him. I don't know if he's ready. I wish it was 2012. However, there's that whole quote about greatness being thrust upon you or something - you know the one you hear in every sports movie. Maybe he'll surprise us.

I am curious, though. Please tell me what you think - do you believe America would elect a woman or an African American first? I honestly don't know which is part of what makes this year so exciting. I think John Edwards is all but out (James Denton from Desperate Housewives' support aside).

Tom and I watched the New Hampshire Primary results while eating dinner and playing gin. We are so senior citizen. It's awesome.

The sun is shining for a reason,
Ms. P

A Daily Show, A Dance War

Last night was a full on exciting night of TV with the premiere of Dance War: Bruno vs Carrie Ann and the return of The Daily Show (heretofore known as A Daily Show until the strike ends) and The Colbert Report.

I also watched last week's Project Runway and was actually impressed by the final frocks (and a bit sad to see Elisa go after hearing the tragic story of how she got run over by a Porsche). Rami's vinyl and paper Twizzler dress was pretty darn cute and I quite liked Jillian's Twizzler corset even though she bores me. I now have hope for this show again even though it seems a bit pathetic that the only drama comes in the form of one Christian Siriano and his stupid hair (nice Reese's wrapper dress, though).

Frankly, though I understand the demands of the writers and their rights to fair revenue from internet sales, I also understand that the writers are about ten people on a staff of hundreds (most of whom get paid less). So... I have no problem with the late night shows returning (and am enjoying Conan and Dave's strike beards. Jay Leno still sucks. I actually couldn't tell he had no writers. It's the same lame crap either way. That said, I have heard that Jay Leno is a very nice man so I don't want to be too mean).

A Daily Show was a bit strange. I couldn't tell whose side Jon Stewart was on. Neither, it seemed, as he appeared to take both the WGA and the AMPTP to task. Stewart and his audience both seemed a bit manic. We'll see how things progress. Colbert was pretty funny sans writers, which doesn't surprise me as he improvs his right-wing blowhard character fairly regularly. He also padded the show with clips which helped fill the space. Andrew Sullivan appeared, and I think he's dyeing his beard now.

As for Dance War: Bruno vs Carrie Ann. These two are not the most discerning judges I've ever seen. If you weren't complete crap they loved you. I'm also disturbed that they picked the guy with the tail. However, I expect Zack the Chin, the pre-med future dentist who looks a lot like Michael McDonald from ATO Records, to do well. This means he will be out next week. I'm also annoyed that they took the poor man's Britney over her pal with the cute bob as they cut the girls from Louisiana from three to one. I can't say I really enjoyed Bruno (is he gay or straight?) vs Carrie Ann (she used to be a pop star in Japan! How neat!) so whether or not I stick with it is up in the air. It's only six weeks, though. So maybe...

Tonight is the New Hampshire Primary! Can you feel the excitement in the air?! I love how all my political pundits were dressed like they were at a ski lodge when they broadcast from NH last Sunday. Even David Gregory, although his patent-leather Prada clad feet told a different story. I just love DG. Did you see him dancing on the Today show? Awesome!

Until tomorrow,
Ms. P

Cashmere Mafia: Feminism Never Looked So Glossy

I confess I'm joking using the word feminism in the same sentence as the new show from Sex and the City/Melrose Place's Darren Star, Cashmere Mafia.

The show stars Lucy Liu (who's better off as a bitch), Miranda Otto (who's better off in Middle Earth), Frances O'Connor (who... might be better off here than in Mansfield Park, actually) and Bonnie Somerville (who I've never seen before so you tell me if she was better off in the O.C).

Liu is a high powered advertising executive competing with her new fiance (Tom Everett Scott who fared better in That Thing You Do!) for the top job at their company. Of course, she wins but loses Everett in the process.

Otto's a high powered COO whose husband (Peter Hermann who fared well in Law & Order:SVU, but even better as The Hair on 30 Rock) is cheating on her with some rich divorcee skank. The girls tell her and it turns out she knows but turns a blind eye. She tells hubby she's going to take a lover then they can start over with a clean slate.

O'Connor, a mergers & acquisitions director, must make appointments to see her husband (Julian Ovenden, a brit who might be faring better on this side of the pond as chick show man candy given his rather short resume). Man Candy gets a new job where he'll be traveling a lot by the end of the ep. What, oh what, will Zoe do with her nanny-less household and crappy assistant?

And Sommerville, a marketing VP, thinks she might be a lesbian... and goes to her priest for advice. Oh, her priest is her brother so I guess his highly secular advice is... acceptable. She kisses the girl but will she get the girl?

Anyway, I'm sure you get the picture. Four high powered women, queens of the 21st century, ladies who have it all and then some, must cope with the demands of being four high powered women, queens of the 21st century, ladies who have it all and then some.

I don't know if I'm enjoying this or if I even want to. Big Business New York life, designer clothes and designer husbands and girlfriends are hardly a world I'm a part of or want to visit with any regularity. The scene at Liu's engagement party where the men tell each other not to use the "R" word because it's just as bad as the "C" word is, of course, barfworthy. The "R" word? Relax. Also, what the hell was up with LL's earrings? Those giant gold sparkly circles were hideous!

Of course I'm going to keep watching. Maybe I can take on Cashmere Mafia and dump Desperate Housewives. At the end of the day, strong women are way more interesting than strident.

Now I'm watching Women's Murder Club. Why must all these shows be about four women? What makes four the perfect number?

Happy Monday,
Ms. P

ps. I'm not sure if The Bucket List is on my bucket list, but it might be hard to resist the lure of Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson even though it looks highly emotionally manipulative.

Desperate Housewives: I HATE SUSAN!

*Desperate Housewives Spoilers*

Susan needs to die. Can the writers come up with another natural disaster to wipe this bitch out? If there's a more self-involved self-obsessed moron on this planet, I'd like to know.

Grrrr... I really need to stop watching this show.

Bree and Orson are living with Susan now that their house is uninhabitable due to that stupid CGI tornado that hit Wisteria Lane (and nowhere else, apparently). Bree, in her uptight Type-A way, is cooking for Susan and her daughter and mending their clothes, etc etc. Susan loves this treatment so much she's decided to sabotage Bree's plan to get her gay roofer back on track (by having her son flirt with the guy who's twice his age but that's another story entirely). Blah blah, cue Susan acting like a nitwit just like every other episode. WHATEVER! OH GOOD GOD, now Susan's playing the sympathy card (My husband's in rehab, I'm pregnant, you're the only thing that's making me sane). Bree falls for it and I'm going to go puke now.

As for Lynette's big cliffhanger drama (are her whiny husband Tom and their horrid kids, alive?), we're forced to wait, oh, two minutes before the sparkling clean children emerge from the rubble! Oh, and the woman that Mrs. McClusky (Mrs. Landingham) invited to her basement doesn't make it. You know why? Because she sacrificed herself for the little brats. The little brats who Lynette asked to be totally annoying because Tom was allergic to Ida the dead lady's cat. Wait, didn't Lynette release the cat? What happened to that cat? At least L has the good grace to feel really crappy about it all.

Carlos is blind. Gabby's husband is dead and didn't leave her anything because she's a cheating grasping little (excuse the word) slut. Nathan Fillion's been kicked out of the house (and off the show, he probably hopes). The show's not even over, but this post is.

Humf,
Ms. P

ps. The New Hampshire Primary is Tuesday. Can Hillary make a comeback? Did anyone see the debate? I only saw one clip - where Obama tells Hills that she's "likable enough." It wasn't a classy move. Maybe he scored some crappy blow. Kitten! Neither Barack Obama or I (or is that "nor I"?) use illegal drugs anymore. We are clean and mean!

pps. I watched We Are Marshall last night. More like We Are Overacting. I can't believe there's a sports movie out there that I didn't enjoy.

Things That Happen at 3 AM

I'm very fond of the F. Scott Fitzgerald quote, "In a real dark night of the soul it is always three o'clock in the morning."

Sadly, I'm not fond of this because I just love The Crack Up, but because the line was featured in a Peanuts strip I read many moons ago.

Speaking of many moons... here's how my life has evolved at 3 am over the years:

Age 17 - at 3 am you would have found me, a fashionable high school dropout/homeless person, ingesting any number of drugs at any number of homes in downtown Dallas.

Age 27 - at 3 am you would have found me, a slightly less fashionable Los Angeleno, leaving the Silverlake nightclub I worked at and heading home to my groovy garage apartment in Atwater Village. Sometimes alone. Sometimes accompanied by a dopey musician whose intellect may have been sorely lacking.

Age 37 - at 3 am you would have found me, the word fashion no longer applying, last night, in bed in rural Kentucky with the husband and the dog, watching Simon & Simon after finishing Stephenie Meyer's Twilight.

Goodness. I don't know what to make of this. I meant for it to be amusing but man, does that not sound like the real dark night of the soul or what?!!

I cannot believe I used to love Simon & Simon. I had a crush on Jameson Parker and everything. However, last night's ep, "Trapdoors", featuring Robbie Rist (cousin Oliver from The Brady Bunch), as a delinquent youth who plays "Angels and Demons" (like Dungeons and Dragons, only better! Is this how Dan Brown got the name for his book?) and hacks into a local bank's computer to steal $740 (using a rotary phone and an old-school War Games era modem), was so horrifically bad I can only offer up the fact that I was 11 as an excuse. Also, my affections seem to have moved from JP to Gerald McRaney. He sure was clever and handsome as he tracked a kidnapper using only his wits and a super tacky directional mic that kept squealing with feedback.

Today I'm starting New Moon, the sequel to Twilight. I'm not sure how I feel about these books. They're fairly well written but sound like a 14-year old girl's idea of the perfect relationship (brilliantly gorgeous sophisticated 100-year old vampire falls in love with awkward and clumsy truck driving teenager and declares, "You are my life" after hanging out with her three times). As annoying as this is, I'm hooked and will see these glorious undead to their co-dependent conclusion. If there is one. I'm contemplating moving on to Anne Rice as I somehow bought but never read Interview With a Vampire and The Vampire Lestat. If anyone out there has any great vampire fiction recommendations, do let me know. Things I would do if I could live forever: learn German, Korean, Photoshop and how to use my SB-800. Am I the most boring person or what? I would totally squander eternal life, but I would be a damn good photographer by the end(less) of it!

Right now I'm watching the series finale of Extras. Again. God, this was depressing - a real slit your wrists episode - especially all those desperate scenes of Ashley Jensen cleaning toilets to Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work". Or wait, the Clive Owen scene might have been worse. I must say I loved the ending, though. Andy and Maggie fly off to the sea, fame be damned. I cannot help but heart Ricky Gervais.

However, before I went for grim and painful, I sat through How to Look Good Naked with Carson Kressly. This show is about a thousand times better than Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. CK is way more fun and there's no bitchy Veronica Webb making snooty comments about the clueless Bridge & Tunnel types they featured. This show is on Lifetime which triggers my automatic gag reflex, but I'll probably watch again.

Alrighty, I've blathered on quite enough on this dreary Saturday afternoon. Tom's gone off to Nashville to do more studio stuff for his record thingy so I'm left here to cuddle up with the tely and the garanimals.

A lovely weekend to you,
Ms. P

Iowa Caucus: They're not smitten with Mitten or clinging to Clinton

Mitt "Mitten" Romney got trounced. So, sort of, did Hillary Clinton. Mike Huckabee had Chuck Norris and his overly lifted eyes standing to the left AND right of him as he gave his Mr. Smith Goes to Washington victory speech. John Edwards bummed everyone out with his bizarro "Thanks for second place" proclamation (the stories about people who died from lack of health care didn't help, either). Dennis Kucinich got zero votes. Joe Biden got one.

I don't know what to make of this. I don't like Mike. I abhor Mitten. For some reason I like the Hills and tonight's other big winner Barack Obama sways me with his charm but not with his experience. Pins and needles til November is what it's looking like.

Back to my television comfort zone, TV... Linus Roache makes a nice addition to Law & Order. Jeremy Sisto, jury's still out, haw haw. Speaking of pins and needles, I haven't watched Project Runway yet (this season's contestants are so making me yawn) or Gossip Girl so nothing new to report on the trash front.

I confess I've spent my night in a haze of MSNBC and HTML. But now it's time for Twilight and we'll see if Edward turns Bella in the sunny meadow. If you've read it, don't tell me!

It ends at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,

My Life Through Oprah-Colored Glasses

I had a tragic suburban housewife moment this afternoon while watching Oprah. Firstly, it was a repeat ("Does My Butt Look Big?"). Secondly, I'd seen it before so it's bad enough that I was watching it again just so I could see the lady in the $700 pants that actually weren't that flattering.

What really freaked me out, though, was the fact that Oprah and her guest were both drinking water out of these tall glasses with straws. The same tall glasses that I own (got them at Target when I moved here). The same tall glass that sat in front of me, on my coffee table, full of water, with a straw. I know this must sound incredibly dopey and inconsequential but at that moment where Oprah's life mirrored mine, I did not feel groovy. I felt like a crazy Opraholic and what's worse is that I really do think about bisecting my butt so that it looks smaller.

For two days straight Tom and I have attempted to go see National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Is this movie about the power of positive thinking? Maybe someday we'll actually make it into the theatre but not while the teenagers of Louisville are still on their winter break. Stonybrook was crawling with them so we fled. Sorry Mr. Cage, I'm trying to support your artistic endeavors although I don't know why since frankly you kinda scare me.

I'm watching America's Next Top Model "Cycle 4 Return to the Runway." Why do these girls always refer to themselves in the third person? Who thinks that's normal?! Apparently Naima guest-starred on Veronica Mars. As a teacher. How did I miss that?

Project Runway, Law & Order (I watched a few minutes of it and let me tell you, Jeremy Sisto's a long way from Clueless) and the Iowa Caucus coming up tomorrow.

Keenyah still has crazy eyes!

2008 Doesn't Seem That Different From 2007

I feel gluttonous. Between the Law & Order: SVU and America's Next Top Model marathons, I suspect my brain is evaporating.

SVU is pretty compelling, but Christopher Meloni looks like he uses that spray on hair stuff and his SUPER INTENSE ALL THE TIME Detective Elliot Stabler gets on my nerves every now and then (I did love him in Harold & Kumar, though). It's like he and Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson trade off on the PMS from episode to episode.

Believe it or not I'm watching the season preview for Rock of Love 2. I cannot believe this freaking show is back on so soon. Why, God, why??!!! I don't know if I can do it. I mean, I feel physically creeped out at the thought of having to once again watch Bret Michaels fornicate with a bunch of skanky hos and this group looks way worse than the girls of season one. Do I have the strength? Will someone support me in this endeavor?

Other interesting things coming up: Darren Star's Cashmere Mafia. It looks terrible but stars both Lucy Liu and Miranda Otto so I have to give it a chance. Then there's Eli Stone starring Sick Boy Jonny Lee Miller. I used to have a big crush on JLM so I want to see this even though it, too, looks kind of... not so great.

Two days until the Iowa Caucus! I'm ready to return to the real world.

Sort of.

I've been reading lots of vampire fiction lately, too, and I have a friend who wants me to watch Buffy (which I've been meaning to do even though Sarah Michelle Gellar gives me the hives). The Pop Culture Express doesn't look like it's making a stop anytime soon. At least I've managed to avoid P.S. I Love You.

Is this a pole?

The Sound of Music: I've been von Trapped!

It's probably criminal that I never saw The Sound of Music until tonight, but it's true. Oh sure, I remember watching bits and pieces as a child and I think we all know the scene where Julie Andrews goes running through the Austrian hillside singing "The hills have eyes," I mean, "The hills are alive..."

Christopher Plummer was quite dashing as Captain Georg von Trapp. He's the original Ewan McGregor. I just read that he despises the movie and I feel a bit disappointed - like I was when I found out Michael Vartan hates his character in Never Been Kissed. I personally love Mr. Coulson, so there!

Even though some of those kids reminded me of an Aryan Nation postcard with their shiny blond hair and glittering blue eyes, they were quite adorable as they trilled, "So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye." I'm rather sad that goodbye meant watching them traipse through the Austrian Alps while fleeing the Nazis. They looked ever so fashionable but one of the boys was in shorts! How did he avoid hypothermia? Did they make it to Switzerland?! Do they ever get to return to their fabulous manor?!! Inquiring minds want to know!

Tomorrow is New Year's Eve. Do you have any resolutions? I have a few but better not to tell you as I rarely keep them. I just hope that every year I grow a little, improve some. I'm not always sure I succeed, but I'll keep trying.

Lots of interesting and bad TV coming our way along with the Iowa and New Hampshire Caucuses so 2008 at least promises to start with a little bang. Will Huckabee best Mitten? Can Clinton hold her ground against Obama? Does anyone still love Edwards? I can't wait to find out!

The sun has gone to bed and so must I,

The Kennedy Center Honors: For Once George Bush and I Have Something in Common

Okay, maybe not. For the better part of this show, GW and I have had a look of mild amusement and confusion on our faces but now I, who knew I was in a time warp while watching this thing, am sitting here wondering who the hell thought Hootie and the Blowfish were still relevant??!

Of course, it's the first time in the show where Bushie has looked fully awake. Figures.

Oh my God, Wonder Woman is dancing around as Hootie regales the crowd with a Beach Boys medley (they're honoring Brian Wilson). At least Robert de Niro has the good sense to, uh, have no rhythm.

I seriously wonder what dimension The Kennedy Center Honors gala flows into ours from. I tend to think 1978 or 1981 as its cheesy tributes harken back to a more innocent (innocently disturbing is more like it) era. I mean, the Steve Martin Vaudeville Dancers? I want to know what was inside Martin's head while four ladies dressed in white suit jackets wearing bunny ears sang "All of Me".

At least Steve Carell provided some genuine funny before things got weird.

Martin Scorsese got the classiest tribute of the evening with Cameron Diaz, De Niro and some hot opera chick opening up the show.

Poor Brian Wilson is all I have to say. From Hootie to beach balls floating down from the ceiling, his face betrayed little emotion. I mean geez, if they were going to mine the 90s, they couldn't get Wilson Phillips?!

When, oh when, is real TV going to start again?

I hope you all are enjoying your holidays. I had a creepy dream last night where I was having an affair with Tom Brokaw and got caught by Tom the husband's mother. 2007 really needs to end.

Why does Kate Walsh love gossip magazines?

Peter's Answer: Charlie Wilson's War

Apologies, as ever, for the sparse posting but I've been in a haze of family holiday happenings.

Tonight we went to see Charlie Wilson's War and though it featured some snappy dialogue courtesy of Aaron Sorkin and Philip Seymour Hoffman doing his best Lester Bangs turned CIA covert operative, the film felt a bit hollow. And sad. It was hard to watch us help Afghanistan knowing what came after.

Not so very ho ho ho.

It's back to Kentucky tomorrow for Tom and me. Can't wait to chillax at the homestead for a few weeks before heading back Texas for two months.

I hope you and yours and yours are having a splendid holiday time.

Oh - here's a link guaranteed to freak you out if you can get Peter to answer.

Nighties,
Ms. P

Clash of the Choirs: The Winner is... That Team Over There!

Clash of the Choirs: Who Knew There'd Be a Tracy Morgan/Ice Cube Tie In?

*SECOND HOUR SPOILERS.*

Well, ladies and gentlemen, it's the big finale! Night four of Clash of the Choirs and, like, holy cow, who's going to win this thing?

I am super gratified to know that I'm not the only person who thinks Maria Menounos stinks as a host because all the people Googling "Maria M sucks" and "Maria M is terrible" keep ending up on my blog. And let me tell you, it's not just one or two hits.

The show opens with some giant Christmas carol extravaganza featuring all five choirs. Then comes the news that Tracy Morgan will be on hand to announce the winner which makes me feel like I'm in the middle of a really funny 30 Rock episode and Jack Donaghy's told Tracy that he has to appear on this ridonkulous NBC reality choir competition as a way to rehab his reputation. Come to think of it, this might not be far from the truth.

Next up is a montage of Team Shelton's evolution, and we finally get a chance to hear from Pink Scarf Guy and Crying Girl. Everyone loves each other, etc etc. Blake is back on his acoustic guitar (which does appear to be plugged into... something. I still can't hear it, though). The choir sings Kool & the Gang's "Celebration" and I'm reminded of line dancing in the 6th grade. This show is amateur hour in the best possible way.

Except when it comes to Maria Moronos. But not when it comes to cutie pie Blake Shelton! How I'm going to miss ol' BS even if I'm still a little grossed out by that lame song he performed last night.

Now it's time to take a trip down memory lane to... four nights ago (my gosh, it seems ever so far away!) when this all began with Patti LaBelle's auditions in Philly. One of the girls says, "It will be hard to go back to reality after this." I do wonder about these people, I hope they'll be okay when they have to go back to Dilbertland or wherever they work in real life. I think Patti's awesome, but I am a little disturbed by the lack of movement in her face. However, as Oprah once said, "Black don't crack," so maybe she's just blessed with great genes and it's not cow poison injections. Team LaBelle does "No More Drama", a song that samples "Nadia's Theme" (or, if you prefer, the theme from The Young and the Restless). Miss Patti's got some real singers, I gotta hand it to her. If she doesn't win I think everyone will be shocked. Everyone being Tom and me in this case.

Okay, did anyone notice the Biggest Loser banner at the bottom of the screen that said "Januaray" instead of "January"?

Patti's featuring her choir at her New Year's Eve show. That's pretty groovy.

Now it's on to Team Lachey and their little "Making the Choir" promo. It's nice to get a short glimpse of Will & Ariel Underwood once again. Cincinnati's singing "What a Wonderful World" and there be some dulcet tones - or there were until the blonde girl soloist blew it. However, she sounds better than I ever do so what do I know? Oh crap, she just told a really sad story after I said something mean. I'm a jerk.

Tracy Morgan and Ice Cube are starring in some choir movie. Doesn't this seem kind of, oh, I don't know, weird? The movie is called First Sunday and Tom wonders if it's another installment in the Friday franchise. Anyway, this is why Tracy's here. I feel much better understanding his presence on the show.

Team Rowland's belting out the Destiny's Child hit "Survivor". I bet Kelly's really enjoying this opportunity to sing Bouncy's parts. Maria Menounos tries to talk to Lindsay (the Hurricane Katrina girl for whom the song meant so much) and shoves the mic in someone else's face. Whoever hired this dimwit needs to lose his/her job. If Clash of the Choirs returns it better return with Cat Deeley!

Okay, I cannot freaking believe this, but NBC really screwed the pooch here. They listed the finale as a one hour show therefore I and everyone else who DVR'ed the show missed the last hour!!! What the hell?! I popped on over to NBC's website and lots of people are complaining. I bet whoever hired Maria Mebrainless was also repsonsible for this mistake.

I guess Team Lachey won because a) I just read an article that said GE will donate $50k to all the losing choir's charities and mentioned every one but Cincy, and b) lots of people at NBC.com are ranting about how "white America cannot stomach it." "It" being an African American woman's choir winning? Or is "it" Patti LaBelle? Either way, I certainly hope this isn't the view of most of "white America".

I am clearly not a psychic as I never thought Team Lachey would win. I guess "Flight of the Bumblebee" put them over the top.

My internet pal Jason made a comment before I watched the show about Michael Bolton possibly pointing at Patti at the end of this show (that I DID NOT SEE BECAUSE NBC SUCKS) so I guess Michael and his chest hair expected her to win, too.

Well, that was really anti-climactic. If I ever see the dramatic conclusion, I'll, uh, oh who bloody cares!

I'm free from the tyranny of COTC and Maria Me-not in Mensa-nos! I'm free!!

This damn writers' strike BETTER END SOON!

Koosh ball,
Ms. P
